Collaborators: Manu Sánchez

Here we present a Manu Sanchez, a boy from Albacete (Spain) who is the responsible of drawing the webcomic «Las Aventuras de Efraín» which he has won several national awards. He also contributed to several compilations of webcomics as «Comics 2.0, Antología del Webcómic del 2010» for the WEE also have made comics for the magazine «El Jueves». He is currently completing his degree in Fine Arts.

A continuación os presentamos a Manu Sánchez, un chico de Albacete que se encarga de dibujar el webcómic «Las Aventuras de Efraín» el cual le ha permitido ganar varios premios a nivel nacional. También ha colaborado en varios recopilatorios de webcómics como el «Comics 2.0, Antología del Webcómic del 2010» para el WEE además de haber hecho tiras cómicas para la revista «El Jueves». Actualmente se encuentra finalizando su licenciatura en Bellas Artes.

Why you started to read and draw comics?

I’ve been drawing since I have memory … Before of start reading I liked to browse comics and, as my mother said, I pretended to read but I invented everything. I have also always been a fan of the cartoon series (one of my dreams was to be an animator) and I guess the crowd is a bit of the hours I spent watching television.

¿Por qué comenzaste a leer y a dibujar comics?

Llevo dibujando desde que tengo memoria… Antes de empezar a leer me gustaba ojear cómics y, según mi madre, hacía como que leía pero me lo inventaba todo. También he sido siempre un fanático de las series de dibujos animados (uno de mis sueños era ser animador) y supongo que la afición me viene un poco de las horas que he pasado delante del televisor.

What comics did you read then and what you read now?

I started reading the classic comics Supermortadelo, Super Zipi and Zape, Pulgarcito, the new TBO … all these mytical magazines of Ediciones B. Now I read everything, I don’t have a favorite genre. Lately I’ve taken to read a lot to Jim Davis and Bill Watterson, perhaps because I recently ventured into publishing a webcomic and I have drawn a lot of humor strip.

¿Qué comics leías entonces y cuales lees actualmente?

Empecé a leer cómics con los clásicos Supermortadelo, Súper Zipi y Zape, Pulgarcito, los nuevos TBO… todas esas revistas míticas de Ediciones B. Ahora leo de todo, no tengo un género preferido. Últimamente me ha dado por leer mucho a Jim Davis y Bill Watterson, quizá porque hace poco me aventuré en la publicación de un webcómic (Las Aventuras de Efraín) y he dibujado mucha tira de humor.

What authors have influenced you most in your way of drawing comics?

We are strongly influenced by what we read. At the beginning I tended to imitate the way of drawing Ibañez, Vazquez, Cera or Ramis, with those big fat nose. Then I had my time manga, like almost everyone, when the Dragon Ball was so famous here. Now I think I tend more in the style of Gendy Tartakovsky cartoon or Bryan Lee O’Malley.

¿Qué autores te han influenciado más en tu manera de dibujar comics?

Te influye mucho lo que lees. Al principio tendía a imitar la forma de dibujar de Ibánez, Vázquez, Cera o Ramis, con esas narizotas gordas. Luego tuve mi época manga, como casi todos, cuando Dragon Ball lo «petaba» aquí. Ahora creo que tiendo más al estilo cartoon de Gendy Tartakovsky o Bryan Lee O´Malley.

How would you describe your way of making comics?

Speaking of O’Malley…When I read Scott Pilgrim I fell in love with all (style, characters, narrative). I think it was what I had always wanted for my own comics, so if I were to give an example of what I like to do, would forward a bit to that.

¿Cómo definirías tu manera de hacer comics?

Hablando de O´Malley… Cuando leí Scott Pilgrim me enamoré de todo (estilo, personajes, narratividad). Creo que era lo que siempre había buscado para mis propios cómics, así que si tuviese que poner un ejemplo de lo que me gusta hacer, remitiría un poco a eso.

What is your opinion on the European Fanzine Project?

I think it’s a great idea, a commitment to raise awareness to those who would like to dedicate one day to this fantastic world. In Spain in particular is very difficult to get a publisher to publish in, and there are authors with great ideas that could work in the market if given a chance.

¿Cual es tu opinión con respecto al Proyecto de Fanzine Europeo?

Creo que es una gran idea, una apuesta para dar a conocer a los que algún día nos gustaría dedicarnos a este fantástico mundo. En España, concretamente, es muy complicado conseguir publicar en alguna editorial, y hay autores con grandes ideas que podrían funcionar en el mercado si se les diese una oportunidad.
